Save Mount Diablo urges residents to be aware of what is happening at the 5,100-acre former site of the Concord Naval Weapons Station. After annexing the acreage, Concord’s original plan included 13,000 new homes. This development plan would fragment open space, block potential recreational corridors, and destroy wildlife habitat, including Mt. Diablo Creek, according to Save Mount Diablo. The group supports creating a new regional park and a buffer along the station’s western boundary as an urban linear park and wants to protect Mt. Diablo Creek by a buffer on the west and by the regional park on the east.
Concord is seeking public input at a workshop from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle. Save Mount Diablo urges attendance to show support for balancing development with open space. Reuse plan alternatives will be presented to the Concord City Council at its meeting Tuesday, Sept. 4.
