Celebrate 25 years

The Pleasanton Weekly will be hosting its 25th Anniversary Party this Friday (Aug. 29) at the Lions Wayside Park in downtown Pleasanton.

The event, which will take place during the final Concert in the Park of 2025, will give community members a chance to meet the Weekly’s editorial team and organizational leadership and give the Weekly a chance to thank its supporters over the years.

The Embarcadero Media Foundation team will be at the park starting at 6 p.m. and music will begin at 7 p.m. with The RPM Band playing danceable rock until 8:30 p.m. The concert is free, and grass seating is first-come, first-served.

Event Innovator Competition winners

Discover San Ramon has announced the winners of its inaugural Event Innovator Competition, with the three winning teams receiving grant money to help bring their visions for new events in the city to life.

“These students’ creativity and vision truly reflect the heart of San Ramon,” said Discover San Ramon spokesperson Shawn Milburn in a press release Tuesday. “Through their innovative ideas, they are not only helping to build community but also creating events that will attract visitors and support our local businesses.”

All winners of the $5,000 prize are students at Dougherty Valley High School. Shiven Balaji’s idea for a Lantern and Drones Festival, Samhita and Akshita Chikoti’s idea for a citywide Summer Olympiad, and Dhyan Shetty, Pranav Raghunath, and Sohan Babu’s idea for a San Ramon Scavenger Stroll were selected as the winning submissions.

The students are set to be recognized with an award ceremony and celebration on Sept. 23, with more details to come.

Read Contra Costa selection

The Contra Costa Library system has announced the Pulitzer Prize winning “James” by Percival Everett as the selection for this year’s Read Contra Costa program.

The book is a retelling of the Mark Twain Classic “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” through the eyes of Jim, the companion of the original story’s protagonist who runs away from slavery.

“The power of a community read is in its ability to bring people together through a shared narrative, and ‘James’ by Percival Everett is the perfect book to spark that connection,” said County Librarian Alison McKee. “This novel can serve as a catalyst for important dialogue. We believe its themes will resonate with readers across our county, and we look forward to the rich and meaningful discussions that will follow.”

Read Contra Costa seeks to bring community members from throughout the county together to experience and discuss the same book, with this year’s program running from Sept. 2 through Nov. 8.

“James” is available in hardback, e-book, and audio book formats throughout the Contra Costa Library system.
