Seismic activity rattled the Tri-Valley on Sunday, with a swarm of more than three-dozen earthquakes, including an earlier temblor that was revised upward to a magnitude of 3.8.

A total of 40 earthquakes were recorded between 9:38 a.m. and 5:33 p.m. with epicenters in the San Ramon Valley, with nearly all located within the city limits of San Ramon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest quakes were the first that were recorded in the series, which were a 3.8 magnitude quake and a 3.7 magnitude quake in San Ramon that struck at 9:38 a.m. and 9:39 a.m., respectively.

One other Bay Area quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 2.8, struck about 27 miles east of San Jose in Patterson, an unincorporated area of Stanislaus County. Another at 1.3 magnitude occurred several hours later in nearby San Martin.

There were no initial reports of damage or impacts in Contra Costa County, according to Contra Costa Fire Protection District assistant chief Tracie Dutter.
