St. Isidore School in Danville held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, hosting veterans who sat in a special section in front of the assembly. They were accompanied by St. Isidore’s students who were their relatives, friends or neighbors, and a student presented each veteran with a red rose after his or her introduction.

“I feel like I’ve been put back into service again,” quipped Paul Cowell, a U.S. marine, when he told about his time in active duty many years ago.

Some veterans told their branch of service and where they served. Others went into more detail.

“We were the first to invade a Japanese island,” said a Marine who served from 1943-46. “It’s been a long time but I remember all my buddies. They’re with me all the time. Semper fi!”

Another veteran recalled the attack at Pearl Harbor and said the next strike was expected at the Panama Canal.

“I was such a fierce fighter that they sent me to the Panama Canal,” he told the assembly. “But then the Japanese never showed up.”

One Air Force pilot from World War II said he ran many bombing missions.

“I never thought I’d make it to this stage,” he said.

The ceremony included a flag raising and Pledge of Allegiance by St. Isidore Scouts, a moment of silence, and bagpiper Bill Anderson playing Amazing Grace.
