The San Ramon City Council is set to hear an update this week on the city’s new communications roadmap as part of a light meeting agenda.
Communications manager Simone Finney will provide a presentation to the council as the only non-consent agenda item in open session at the council’s upcoming regular meeting Tuesday.
One of the items on the consent calendar, which consists of items that are considered routine in nature and generally voted on as a package, is a resolution that would adopt the latest requirements in the state’s Wildland Urban Interface Code, which is being put forward by the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.
“These local modifications are more stringent than the building standards adopted by the State Fire Marshal and contained in the California Building Standards Code,” chief building official Josh DeMello wrote in a staff report for the upcoming meeting. “Included in the SRVFPD’s proposed ordinance are additional permitting requirements, site access and fire road requirements, hazard fuel abatement for wildland fire areas, definitions, and additional fire sprinkler provisions for commercial and residential occupancies.”
The update comes following the triannual update on model building codes from the International Code Council, with the state having adopted those recommended building standards and other amendments last year.
“The 2025 California Building Standards Code introduces a new Wildland-Urban Interface Code (WUIC) consolidating wildfire safety standards for construction and landscaping in high-risk fire zones to improve community resilience and fire protection,” DeMello wrote.
The changes would not have an immediate fiscal impact, according to DeMello, but could bring on increased construction costs for additional fire sprinkler requirements for some residential and commercial buildings.
In other business, the council is set to hold a closed session discussion to consider an appeal of a previous dismissal of an unnamed employee.
The San Ramon City Council is set to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 10). The agenda is available here.
