A man shot and killed by Walnut Creek police last week has been identified as Joaquin Pereyra by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Division.
Pereyra, a 46-year-old Walnut Creek resident, was allegedly armed with a pellet gun when officers shot him early on Thursday morning.
At about 12:10 a.m., officers were sent to the area of Buena Vista and Alvarado avenues on a report of a male wearing dark clothing who was looking into homes and parked vehicles with a flashlight, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found a man matching the description and holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers issued commands for him to drop the weapon but he “did not comply, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a news release.
Pereyra was pronounced dead at the scene. The weapon was later determined to be a pellet gun that resembled a handgun, according to police.
No officers were injured. As part of department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Walnut Creek Police Department at (925) 943-5844 or an anonymous tip line at (925) 943-5865.
