One week after dropping a pair of games to Granada, the Foothill baseball team opened a two-game set against De La Salle with yet another loss, this by the 5-0 variety.

But just when it looked darkest for the Falcons, they found their inner resolve, jumping up to hand De La Salle its first EBAL loss with a 6-5 final.

On offense the Falcons were led by Eli Davidson and Hudson Flora. Davidson had a pair of hits, scored two runs and drove in a run. Flora finished with two hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored a run.

The defense was led by pitcher George Schmitt Jr., who pitched the last 2.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out five of the eight batters he faced.

The Falcons dropped a pair of matches to the top two teams in the EBAL but played the teams tough throughout.

In a 3-0 loss to Dublin, the scores were 27-25, 25-23, 26-24 on Senior Night for Foothill.

All seven seniors were celebrated, and each was able to contribute in a positive way in a competitive match. The seven seniors are Ivan Kuo, Trey Elson, Bharat Marimuthu, Alex Melnick and tri-captains Thomas Paduraru, Jeremy Sun and Josh Salonga.

Later in the week, the Falcons fell to Livermore 20-25, 28-26, 18-25, 19-25.

The highlights came from Salonga (32 assists, 8 digs, 5 kills), Elson (12 kills at .450 clip, 1 block), Paduraru (10 kills at .400, 2 blocks) and Sun (10 kills, 10 digs).

Derby Day in Pleasanton

It’s time for the most exciting two minutes in sports, which means it’s time for the Kentucky Derby Pick’Em Contest at the Pleasanton Off-Track Betting building on the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Saturday (May 2).

This contest is free to enter and is straightforward. You pick the winner in eight stake races on the Churchill Downs card, starting with the Derby City Distaff and culminating with the Kentucky Derby.

You will get points on a 5-3-1 basis depending on if your horse runs in the top three. If your horse scratches, you get the post-time favorite.

There is no in-depth knowledge of horse racing required as at its basic, just look at the horses entered in the contest races and pick a winner.

The person with the most points is the winner. The tiebreakers are jockey with the most wins in the contest races; trainer with the most winners in the contest races; person with the most wins in contest; and flip of a coin.

You must be present at the Pleasanton OTB on Saturday to be eligible to win. If you finish in the top three and you’re not there, the prize will be awarded to the fourth-place finisher, and so on.

The deadline to enter is post-time of the first race of the contest – the Derby City Distaff at 9:38 a.m. The prize pool is as follows: first place, $500 voucher; second place, $250 voucher; and third place, $100 voucher.

Entry forms are available at the OTB. Once again, there is no risk to enter the contest and you must be onsite to win a prize.
