The Tri-Valley has an opportunity to go behind the headlines and ongoing notoriety of the Zodiac killer and Black Dahlia murder next weekend, in which the codebreaking expert who solved both cases joins other experts for a panel presentation.

Limited tickets remain for Alex Baber’s appearance at the Village Theatre in Danville, which will include conversations with author Michael Connelly and cold case experts Rick Jackson and Mitzi Roberts – both Los Angeles Police Department veterans – and David Tresmontan, who developed the cold case unit at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and continues to serve on it.

“Alex Baber, with his genius IQ and the hyper-concentration characteristic of his autism, succeeded where all others had failed — breaking the code of the Zodiac Killer’s final taunting communication with authorities,” organizers with the Eugene O’Neill Foundation wrote in an announcement last month. “This enabled Baber to not only establish that the Zodiac Killer was a man named Marvin Margolis, but also to prove that Margolis murdered Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia.”

Baber now serves as director of the Cold Case Consultants of America, focusing in evidence review, forensic documentation, and primary source analysis in cold cases and continuing to collaborate with law enforcement.

Jackson and Roberts have both served as subjects for Connelly’s prolific true crime writing career. Baber is the subject of his latest podcast “Killer in the Code”, which organizers encourage attendees to listen to ahead of the event.

“Killer In The Code follows Baber on his investigative journey across the country as he uses cryptology, genealogy, AI and finally long hours of basic gumshoe work to identify a suspect that has taunted and eluded authorities for decades,” organizers of Connelly’s podcast wrote on its website.

The live event at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Danville’s Village Theatre is also set to include an opportunity for audience questions. Tickets and more information are available at eugeneoneill.org.
