Alamo Plaza Shopping Center is losing one of its anchors this month, as the Rite Aid store is shuttering for good as part of the continued fallout of the company’s bankruptcy proceedings.
With “Everything Must Go!” and “Clearance” signs throughout the building and shelves nearly empty, Rite Aid staff said Thursday the final day for the store at 130 Alamo Plaza would be Aug. 24 but declined further comment. The few remaining items were being sold at deep discounts, and even the shelves themselves and other fixtures could be purchased.
“Rite Aid Alamo would like to thank all of our customers for the support over the years! Thank you! We will miss you!” employees wrote on a handmade poster taped to the checkout counter.

The fate of the store had been the source of speculation for months as news spread of Rite Aid Corporation’s financial difficulties and ultimately its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings May 5. The Alamo location was one of two still remaining in the Tri-Valley as of this month, with the Pleasanton store also scheduled to permanently close Aug. 24.
Pharmacy services ended at Alamo’s Rite Aid on July 28, with customers’ prescriptions transferred to the CVS Pharmacy across the street at 3158 Danville Blvd.
With Rite Aid’s departure, Alamo Plaza will be down to Safeway as lone anchor tenant. Many of the medium and smaller spaces are currently occupied, including eateries, banks, professional services and other businesses.
One of the other noticeable units without a long-term tenant is right next door to Rite Aid at 140A Alamo Plaza, which used to house the Alamo Express club by 24 Hour Fitness until it closed early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Adopt-A-Family Bikes is using that empty storefront as its seasonal location this month.
