Danville’s current vice mayor and first-term councilmember David Fong has announced that he will be stepping down from the dais at the expiration of his term in office at the end of the year.

Fong said this week that he made the decision out of a desire to spend more time with his family, pointing to the challenges of balancing home life and work on the council over the course of the term that he was elected to in 2020.

“Serving the community of Danville as a Councilmember and Vice Mayor, has been a tremendous honor,” Fong wrote in his announcement this week. “With their knowledge, experience, unwavering trust and integrity, and a deep commitment to the community, I am proud to be part of the Town Council team of Karen Stepper, Renee Morgan, Newell Arnerich, and Robert Storer, and the staff led by Town Manager, Joe Calabrigo.”

Fong began his first and only term on the council after being elected in 2020 in a nine-candidate race for three open seats that year, in which incumbent councilmembers Newell Arnerich and Renee Morgan were elected to their seventh and third terms, respectively, which are expiring at the end of this year.

While his time on the council is relatively short, Fong pointed to highlights of his work over the course of his term so far, including working toward a balanced budget, maintaining Danville’s “small-town atmosphere,” support for small businesses, and partnership with law enforcement, all while contending with the obstacles brought on by the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Thank you, Danville and the greater Tri Valley communities , for your trust and support throughout my term,” Fong said. “With a legacy of dedication, excellence, and strong leadership, I am confident that the Town of Danville’s best days are still ahead.”
