Each year, the city of Dublin looks to highlight some of its most impactful and outstanding residents with award recognitions. The 2023 list of winners have all shown their dedication and love for the Dublin community through service, volunteer work or perseverance.
Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Organization of the Year were given during a ceremony at the Shannon Community Center in Dublin on Feb. 21. Winners of the Mayor’s Award and Mayor’s Legacy Award were also announced.

The city said award recipients showed significant contributions toward enhancing the quality of life for the Dublin community throughout last year.
The highly anticipated Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Michael and Tammy Goldstein, nominated by Shelby Perry. The pair are well-known members of the Dublin Lions Club and contribute to many city and community events.
“Michael and Tammy Goldstein embody the spirit of community and selflessness, making them exemplary candidates for Citizen of the Year,” city representatives said. “Their unwavering dedication to enhancing our community shines through their tireless efforts. (They) are an integral part of our community.”
The Goldsteins have helped organize and serve food at the Dublin Family Campouts and Breakfast with Santa community events. They are known to regularly attend shows during the Summer Concert series.
“They have truly become a cornerstone of these cherished events and their genuine kindness and willingness to serve others exemplify the values we hold dear,” city reps added.

Dublin High School senior Troy Matheny was awarded Young Citizen of the Year, nominated by Maureen Byrne, Warren Parker and Jamie Melvin. Matheny is active in school leadership, the Best Buddies Club and the DHS athletic program, city officials said.
During his freshman year, he joined the Best Buddies Club, a group that focuses on fostering safe and friendly environments in schools. Now serving as chapter president, he recently attended a regional conference on behalf of the club to learn about implementing inclusivity for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
With his fellow club members, Matheny helped to organize various Tri-Valley Special Olympics events. He also previously served as co-captain of the DHS varsity football team.
“Troy simply does things the right way, always,” said Parker, his coach. “He is a remarkable football player and was a coaches pick to be a team captain this season.
“Troy sets the standard for hard work and maximum effort, even when he is oftentimes undersized. He is reliable, never quits and he gives 100% of himself for his teammates and his school. He is selfless, purely selfless. His consistency and tenacity are unmatched, he is loyal and trustworthy and is destined to do amazing things and continue to be a pillar in his adulthood,” Parker added.
Organization of the Year was awarded to Dublin Partners in Education, which was nominated for its continued work to support Dublin students. DPIE offers afterschool and summer programs for students and engages in enduring fundraising events.
In 2023 committing over $150,000 for student success and educational programs like One City, One Book and scholarships for recent high school graduates.
“We are very grateful for this ongoing source of support,” city officials said. “It is always a challenge to raise money during hard economic times. DPIE was able to do so while providing a service. DPIE partners with the Dublin Unified School district to provide their services.”

“They seek input from the community as to where the money can be best utilized. This takes a village. The citizens of Dublin have attended their fundraising events and volunteered to help raise money. This truly is a selfless group, and DUSD is so fortunate to have their partnership,” they added.
The Mayor’s Award is presented to individuals who work for the community of Dublin and service its residents. The 2023 selections by Mayor Melissa Hernandez were Capt. Miguel Campos of Dublin Police Services, Lt. Misty Carausu of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and the Dublin Police Services Investigative Services Unit.
The Mayor’s Legacy Award, also handpicked by Hernandez, was given to Margaret Liang. The Legacy Award recipient is chosen for their “extraordinary, long-term dedication to the Dublin community.”

The Organization of the Year was also awarded a $500 prize. The Citizen and Young Citizen winners will receive a $300 donation to give to a nonprofit of their choice.
