A 70-year-old man after experiencing a medical emergency at a county jail following a trespassing arrest over the weekend in San Pablo, police said.

Officers were called to the San Pablo Lytton Casino at about 10:44 p.m. Saturday after reports that a banned guest was refusing to leave the property. While officers were on the way, casino security staff told dispatchers the man was physically resisting and that they were trying to handcuff him.

When officers arrived, casino security had already detained the man in handcuffs. Police took the El Cerrito resident into custody on suspicion of trespassing and transported him to the county jail. Police said officers did not use force during the arrest.

At the jail, the man suffered an unknown medical emergency. Jail staff and firefighters with the Contra Costa Fire Protection District provided medical aid and rushed him to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts, according to police.

The man’s identity was not immediately released.

County sheriff’s officials provided more detail on Monday about the timeline of the circumstances at the Martinez Detention Facility.

“The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff would like to clarify that the arrestee was not accepted and never booked into MDF for medical reasons. The fire department and an ambulance were called, and the person was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased,” the office stated.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated following a statement from the sheriff’s office clarifying that the arrestee was never taken into jail custody, although the medical emergency happened at the facility.
