The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s Board of Education is set to hold an informational workshop and discussion on the district’s processes for selecting instructional materials, fostering caregiver engagement, and responding to parental concerns.
The workshop is scheduled for a special board meeting this week, following a request from several trustees during their Feb. 22 meeting in which they considered – and ultimately voted against 4-1 – an appeal from a parent requesting that a book she was concerned about her high school student reading be removed from district shelves.
“The SRVUSD Board Workshop will focus on reviewing the selection and use of instructional materials in SRVUSD, with a special emphasis on the utilization of books/novels to teach English Language Arts (ELA) standards,” wrote Debra Petish, executive director of curriculum and instruction, in a staff report prepared for the meeting.
“The session will explore the multifaceted process of selecting, acquiring, and utilizing books/novels, covering the relevant Education Codes, policies, and practices that are currently in place,” she continued.
The workshop is set to include a review of the guiding principles, educational governance requirements, and teaching practices currently used in the district’s selection of course and supplementary materials, as well as the district’s board policies on course material and curriculum as well as responding to complaints.
The SRVUSD Board of Education is set to meet at 4 p.m. on Thursday (April 25). The agenda is available here.
