The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s board of education has signed off on a contract for the district’s incoming superintendent, paving the way for him to take the reins directly following the departure of its current superintendent.
The board voted unanimously at their May 14 meeting to approve a proposed contract with CJ Cammack, a former HR director with the district and current superintendent of the Fremont Unified School District, effective July 1 – the day after the official departure of current Superintendent John Malloy.
Cammack’s initial contract is for a three-year term through 2027, with a $395,000.00 annual salary for the upcoming school year that will be paid through the district’s General Fund.
He is set to receive a 3% raise each year under the terms of the contract, unless raises obtained by the district’s bargaining units are less than that amount, in which case his annual raise would be in line with those in future union contracts. Any increase to the initial salary would require a public hearing and vote at a board meeting. The contract includes annual performance reviews from the board by June for each year of his employment.
“I’m really excited and even though it’s sad to see Dr. Malloy leaving, I’m really excited about CJ Cammack coming on board,” Area 1 trustee Jesse vanZee said ahead of last week’s vote. “There were phenomenal candidates that did apply for this, and we did a lot of work doing our due diligence.”
“You give very thorough interviews and really tailor down our interview approach to really the individual qualities and things that our district’s striving for,” vanZee continued. “And I think we even heard that feedback from Leadership Associates, who helped us with the search. But ultimately at the end of the day – and I don’t say this as much to you, because you already know, but to the public, that I am really excited and hopeful for everything CJ is going to do, and continue to help make SRVUSD the best district it possibly can and provide as best as we possibly can for all our students.”
Area 4 trustee Susanna Ordway made the motion to approve Cammack’s contract, which was seconded by Area 5 trustee Rachel Hurd ahead of its unanimous approval by the board.
“I am humbled and excited to serve the San Ramon Valley Unified School District,” Cammack said on social media that evening. “Looking forward to working with students, staff, families, the community, and our Board of Education.
Cammack, who has been at the helm of the Fremont school district since 2020, originally left his post as assistant superintendent of human resources for SRVUSD in 2015 for another HR position at the Martinez Unified School District, where he was promoted to superintendent in 2016.
The contract approval means the end of a months-long recruitment process for the district, which began seeking a successor for Malloy in February, when he announced that he would be departing the role he began in 2020 for a position with the national School Superintendents’ Association effective June 30.
