The Contra Costa County Office of Education announced plans on Thursday to acquire the broadcast license for KVHS 90.5 FM from the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, officials announced.
The MDUSD Board of Education unanimously approved the transfer for $1 last week, a press release noted.
KVHS has served central Contra Costa County as a noncommercial educational FM station since its founding at Clayton Valley High School in 1966.
“KVHS has a rich legacy of serving the local community and empowering young people through radio,” said County Superintendent Lynn Mackey. “We are excited to be part of the next chapter in that legacy.”
The transfer is pending Federal Communications Commission approval. The process is expected to take about three months.
CCCOE plans to relocate the station’s antenna and apply for a Special Temporary Authority to resume over-the-air broadcasting. In the meantime, KVHS will continue streaming online at kvhs.com.
KVHS is accepting donations to support its operations at donorbox.org/support-kvhs-radio-station.
