The mayoral race in San Ramon is set to be wide open this year, with incumbent mayor and longtime councilmember Dave Hudson not seeking reelection according to city officials this week, following two consecutive terms in the seat.

With Hudson’s current term set to expire at the end of the year, the city is set to be under new leadership starting in 2025, with voters to select his successor in the upcoming general election this November.
Hudson was elected for a second consecutive term in the position in 2022, beating out challengers Sabina Zafar and Dinesh Govindarao. Shortly after being sworn in for the current two-year term through 2024, he was struck by medical issues that resulted in a months-long absence from the dais starting in January 2023, returning to his post that May.
Hudson was first elected to the mayor’s seat in 2020 as the successor to longtime mayor Bill Clarkson, who was elected to the position in 2011. Prior to that, Hudson earned the title of longest tenured San Ramon councilmember, serving in that capacity for 23 years after four years on the city’s planning commission.
With months to go before the final candidate list for the November election is finalized in August, the race for the open mayor’s seat is still taking shape. District 2 Councilmember Mark Armstrong, who was selected as vice mayor for 2023 and served as the city’s acting mayor amid Hudson’s absence, is so far the only candidate to have announced a campaign for the position.
Hudson did not respond to a request for comment or insight as to whether he will seek to return to his City Council seat as of Monday afternoon.
