The Danville Town Council is poised to sign off on a six-figure grant for Discovery Counseling Center in order to facilitate a new group therapy program that officials anticipate “will profoundly enhance the mental health and well-being of the community”, according to the resolution set for a vote at its next regular meeting.
Discovery Counseling has requested funding for a comprehensive group therapy program aimed particularly at supporting underserved populations, including teens and seniors, with the Town Council poised Tuesday to approve a $126,000 grant to the local mental health nonprofit that would put the program into place for three years.
The group counseling program is set to be led by licensed therapists aimed at addressing mental health issues in the community including anxiety, depression, trauma and grief, as well as seeking to offer means for participants to connect with one another and reduce feelings of isolation. It would be available at no cost for Danville residents during the initial three-year period.
The grant is set to come from $250,000 in previously appropriated funding for identifying, developing and supporting mental health initiatives aimed at addressing widespread mental health challenges that were exacerbated and brought into further light at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.Â
During the three years of the program’s duration, Discovery Counseling is set to provide annual updates to the council with insights into the programs’ progress and successes, measured by the number of people served by the program as well as other metrics.
The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 17). The agenda is available here.
In other business, Mayor Karen Stepper is set to issue a proclamation recognizing Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.
