The Danville Town Council is set for two back-to-back study sessions Tuesday morning, the latter of which will consist of talks on next steps for a highly anticipated multi-sport skate park that would be the first of its kind in town.

The skate park discussion is set for the second meeting of the morning, in which town staff will provide a status update on the capital maintenance project for Diablo Vista Park that includes the construction of a skate park.

The skate park and playground renovation projects had previously gone to bid earlier this year, with the council ultimately rejecting both bids received amid protests and allegations from both developers. Since then, they have directed town staff to reimagine them as two separate projects with the goal of fending off the same challenges in the next round of bidding.

The main topic of discussion is set to be how to proceed with the two projects now that the cost for both – which officials had previously hoped to minimize by combining the two projects – are set to exceed the $3,301,608 in funding already budgeted for them.

Of the funding currently available, $959,628 is designated for the playground renovation and  $2,341,980 for the skate park, with engineering staff estimating the total costs at $2,169,245 and $2,150,381 respectively.

Town staff are set to move forward with the bidding process for either or both projects, according to a staff report from landscape architect Bob Russell.

“Further determination regarding whether and how to proceed with construction can occur once bids are received and opened,” Russell wrote.

At that point, he said that the council would still need to deliberate and make decisions on funding and construction timing.

The Danville Town Council is set to meet for their second study session of the day at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10. The agenda is available here.
