The Village Theatre will celebrate its grand opening next month after extensive work was done on the lobby and to the front of the historic building. The entry to the community theater was reconfigured to include an art gallery, larger restrooms and a new ticket area.
Now the Town of Danville Recreation Services Department is seeking volunteers to be docents and members for the Curatorial Committee.
The Town’s Arts Commission has chosen commissioner Tricia Grame to serve on this sub-committee due to her professional experience in curating gallery exhibitions.
“They will meet a couple of times a year, and they have to really look ahead,” reported Assistant Town Manager Marcia Somers at a Town Council Study Session last week.
The new Art Gallery will also need docents, she noted, to be available to acquaint visitors to the exhibits.
“Docents have to make it a pleasant and positive experience,” said Somers.
At present there are two volunteer opportunities:
* Docents for the Village Theatre Art Gallery – to lead, teach and inspire our community to appreciate fine art. This position also offers the opportunity to learn about different works of arts, artists, historical periods and cultures. No experience is necessary. Training will be provided and flexible shifts are available. Docents provide an essential link between the exhibit and the visitor. For more information contact Jane Laris at jlaris@ci.danville.ca.us or call 314-3465
* Members for the Curatorial Committee for the new art gallery. Members of this committee will work with together to identify, review and select exhibits for the gallery. The Curatorial Committee will meet monthly to provide guidance and direction of the new gallery. Individuals with a professional background in the visual/cultural art, arts education, municipal cultural arts programs and/or gallery, museum or curatorial experience are encouraged to apply.
Curatorial Committee volunteers are requested to serve a two-year term.
“With the opening of the Village Theatre Art Gallery this is a unique time for the town. As a docent or curatorial committee member you will be sharing in this excitement and helping others develop an appreciation for art,” said Michelle Lacy, Recreation Services Manager.
To print out an application, visit www.ci.danville.ca.us. Applications are due by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, and selections will be made by mid-December.
The grand opening for the Village Theatre Art Gallery will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14.
The inaugural exhibit will be “Peanuts at Bat,” from the Charles M. Schultz Museum.
“Light Fantastic,” a contemporary Irish stained glass art show organized by the Crafts Council of Ireland, Kilkenny, will be on display from January to March. It will be followed in April and May by a show organized by the Mt. Diablo Museum curator featuring original work.
