Sam Stone, a high school senior representing American Legion Post 246, faced five other district winners on Sunday for the American Legion Area II Oratorical Contest held in Pacifica. The contest focuses on the constitution with an emphasis on the responsibilities of citizens to the Constitution and the United States government.

Contestants deliver a prepared eight-10 minute oration on some phase of the constitution followed by a three-five-minute assigned topic regarding a specific clause, statute, section or amendment of the Constitution.

Stone, representing Danville Post 246 and Monte Vista High School, was the winner in a competitive competition of the Area II contest. He was presented with a gold medal and a check in the amount of $500.

He will now move on to the department finals, which will determine who will represent California at the national finals in Indianapolis. The finals will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Modesto City Hall.

Stone first prevailed over a field of local contestants Jan. 12 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Danville and received a gold medal and $100. Next he won the District 9 contest held Jan. 24, also in Danville.
