Juan Archuleta, whose “Transcending Forest” is pictured above, has been painting forest scenes and redwood trees since 1976. He is one of 46 local artists featured in the New Inspirations exhibit at the Blackhawk Gallery, on display through Monday, March 7.

New Inspirations will primarily feature two dimensional works, said Gallery Director Vicky Richardson, adding that there will also be expressionists and impressionists, as well as some abstract work.

Elena Doronkina will be a featured abstract artist. Her expressionistic, textural paintings are a cross between sculpture and two-dimensional painting.

“It’s a very fresh, new kind of look,” said Richardson.

In addition to abstracts, jewelers, landscape artists, stone artists and glass artists will have a prominent place in the exhibit. Joe Cleary will display his bronzes while Charles H. White will be a featured landscape painter.

“Popular work is landscapes of Mt. Diablo,” said Richards. “There are some Italian landscapes also, our artists are well traveled. They come back with wonderful images.”

Photographer Sean McDonough will display a full spectrum of styles – from nature to stop-action and creative photography taken around the world.

Additionally, Danville artist Shirley Robles’ large-scale whimsical frogs, cats and rabbits will “attract people of all ages.” Robles will also be the guest artist at the Alamo Danville Artists’ Society’s (ADAS) January meeting next week.

While 99 percent of the work displayed in the exhibit is for sale, Richards encourages visitors to “think of this as a small art museum, a place to come and enjoy art, not necessarily to buy.”

The Blackhawk Gallery is operated by featuring ADAS member artists exhibiting paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel; photography, sculpture, wearable art, jewelry and notecards. The exhibit is free to the public and artists in the gallery donate a percentage of their sales to support the Art in the Schools program.

  1. Hmmm…I recall art being displayed based on a lottery the last time I exhibited my work at the Blackhawk Gallery. Was your art displayed based on politics, Alamo painter? Do tell.

  2. For all those interested in joining this ADAS Co-op Gallery:

    1) Only submit work that fits the following subject matter:

    * Pretty Landscapes with corny pathways and flowers,
    * Vineyards and seascapes (please include birds in all seacapes),
    * Poorly executed and unoriginal still lives that would make Cezanne vomit and turn in his grave,
    * and “abstract” sculptures, paintings, jewelry, etc.

Do not attempt to submit the following work that does not meet the “community standards” test:

    * Nudes: Absolutely no nudes with genitals or body parts that may offend the viewer. For example, the statue “David” by Michelangelo. Mr. Michelangelo, do not waste our time with your submissions.
    * Religious or spiritual imagery or sculpture. Mr. Pope, do not attempt to submit any works from the Vatican. Dont waste our time.

    Thank you
