Roving Reporter Jenn Teitell searched downtown Danville for a time machine but, finding nothing, asked residents If you could go back to any time in history, what would it be?
Sam Richardson, tenth grader: “Back to Sparta so I could be a Spartan. It looks fun, and the movie’s good.” Photo by Jenn Teitell.
Carlie Beerus, fifth grader: “I would go back to the 1990’s because that’s when my favorite show, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, was recorded.” Photo by Jenn Teitell.
Sue Flood, psychiatric social worker: “I have a fascination for Elizabethan England, and I find myself just fantasizing about what it would be like to be in that medieval time with all the different things going on, Queen Elizabeth, so I think I’d like to go back to that.” Photo by Jenn Teitell.
Jake Hensley, second grader: “I’d go on the Mayflower because it would be cool to see all the land for the first time, and you wouldn’t see the library and stuff. You’d just see plain trees and no benches and stuff.” Photo by Jenn Teitell.
Rebecca Scharlach, student: “I’d probably go back to the Irish revolts against British occupation because it seems like a lot of their tactics were very successful at resisting invasion and have undoubtedly been lost to history primarily because history is written by the victors. I think that I would like to see somewhat more successful movements against colonization coalescing in the near future, and I think that part of doing that is learning from history. And it’s very hard to do that when history is constantly being destroyed, dislocated, lost and any attempt to tell the truth about history is being considered crazy and or completely dismissed by the people who teach us about history, who obviously have a very specific motivation behind that telling.” Photo by Jenn Teitell.
