Danville teacher formally charged with child porn possession

Authorities allege Diablo Vista math teacher had hundreds of illicit images

A Danville middle school teacher has been formally charged with possessing child pornography after authorities allege he had more than 600 illicit images and videos depicting children engaged in sexual acts, Contra Costa County District Attorney Mark A. Peterson announced Thursday.

Mitchell Wolf, 58, of Danville faces one felony count of aggravated child pornography possession. Criminal charges were officially filed on Wednesday, five days after investigators arrested Wolf following a search of his Bourne Lane home.

Wolf, who remains in custody at the county jail, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave from his position as math teacher at Diablo Vista Middle School.

"We are shocked by these allegations, but also need to let the investigative process take its course. At this point, we have no reason to believe that there was any inappropriate conduct involving any of our students, past or present," Terry Koehne, community relations director for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, said on Thursday.

The felony count stems from an investigation conducted by the Silicon Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a regional law enforcement coalition.

The task force executed a search warrant at Wolf's home in the 500 block of Bourne Lane on Friday and found "a significant amount of child pornography" stored on computers and DVDs in the residence, according to Peterson.

Wolf, who was arrested as a result of the search, is being held in jail in lieu of $1 million bail. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Tuesday, at which time he could enter a plea, according to Peterson.

San Ramon Valley schools superintendent Mary Shelton sent a message to all district parents Friday afternoon in the wake of Wolf's arrest, expressing shock and disappointment at the allegations and reiterating that officials have no reason to think any San Ramon Valley students were involved.

"Although we cannot comment on the specifics of the investigation, we want to assure you that we take very seriously any allegations of employee misconduct, and will do everything in our power to assist police in the process," Shelton said.

Wolf had been a teacher at Diablo Vista since 2002, according to Koehne.

The DA asked anyone with information about the case to contact Danville police Sgt. Jason Haynes at 314-3700 or jhaynes@danville.ca.gov.

The task force consists of investigators from the sheriff's and DA's offices as well as detectives from the Danville, San Ramon, Martinez, Walnut Creek, Brentwood, Moraga, Concord, Pleasant Hill and San Jose police departments.

I don’t know this man, but I hope that everyone remembers that his family is innocent and comments posted online can unintentionally hurt children, spouses, parents, siblings, friends, etc.

I pray that none of our Danville children our victims and I pray for the lost children out there that just need one person to save them.

Sadly, our town went through this 5 years ago. It seems more and more crimes are being perpetrated on our children because people look the other way or don’t want to get involved. So sad!

See something…Do something!

MITCHELL WOLF of Danville ARRESTED: Web Link

He's in jail where he belongs.

It's unfortunate that his family is harmed by HIS illegal behavior. The public has a right to respond to his criminal behavior/news. The situation is public because the police arrested him. It's important news/information and it's critical that innocent children/families/friends have been impacted by a criminal. Mitchell Wolf is not longer a secret perp.

The more the situation is publicly discussed by concerned adults/families, it's possible that other victims will be identified and offered the appropriate help.

Later for the perp...

i rest my case...

Correction: Mitchell Wolf is no longer a secret perpetrator of sexual violence against children.

Children have a right to be protected from predatory adults.

First paragraph: "....authorities allege...."

Authorities have the evidence. "Alleging" is what makes the criminal/justice system so expensive.

When there is evidence for a crime, justice should be swift. Anyone want to guess how long this will drag out?

Cholo, I don't know where you are from, but here in Danville, a man is innocent until proven guilty. And he was not charged for committing sexual violence against children, only with possession of pictures -- still horrible for a middle school teacher, granted, but a world apart from committing the acts himself. I'm guessing there are millions of people in the world that have enjoyed watching a porn film but would never make one themselves, so let's not make that leap of making them one and the same with someone we don't know.

Mitchell Wolf was probably incarcerated because of the possession/content of the child porn.

I wonder if he shared his coooool collection of child porn with his own or neighbor children? I'm curious what his students observed? Who did he share his porn collection with...where did he get it? hmmmmmmmmmm...

Web Link

I'm concerned that he's in jail, according to Julie he is Guilty until proven innocent? duh...

Julie,
I respectfully disagree with you. Pictures are just as bad as committing the act. Children were used to make these pictures and pornography. Buying them and viewing them supports this deplorable industry and is a symptom of a sick and perveted individual who needs help.

What is the experience of children who are being used in a porn film?

The use of children, adults female/male for pornography is a form of sexual violence.

That others delight in the sexual activity exhibited in either child/adult pornography is curious.

Julie, you might benefit from checking out the blog of: Dr. Melissa Farley, Prostitution, Research and Education.

Attorney Katherine McKinnon and others also write extensively on the topic.

Possessing child pornography is NOT to be compared to possessing adult pornography. It is a criminal act to own child pornography of any kind. Because enough evidence has been collected to arrest and charge Mr. Wolf with owning child pornography, there is enough reason for Danville parents to be alarmed. Furthermore, based on some of the comments, there are several instances where students were made “uncomfortable” by this teacher. Students should never feel threatened in a classroom setting. They are still under age minors; regardless of gender, how they are dressed,(or how their parents are dressed). I am curious as to whether the principal and/or school district was notified.

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHILD/ADULT PORNOGRAPHY.

SEXUAL ABUSE/TORTURE/HUMAN SLAVERY OF CHILDREN/ADULTS IS EXACTLY THE SAME.

Too much is known/understood about what happens to human beings involved in pornography.

Human sexual slavery is human sexual slavery.

Dr. Judith Herman, MD from Harvard University writes extensively about the harm done to children/adults/PTSD.

She is a psychiatrist. If ever there was a great scholar in our midst, it is Judith Herman, MD.

She puts pornography in a different light.

The whole thing disgusts me... to have sexual pictures of prepubescent children is the grossest thing I've ever heard. I wonder if they will report if any pictures/videos were found on his school computer?

I'm not from Danville, but that matters not. I still wonder why people are so shocked about this being a teacher. No, I get that you're upset due to his access to, and possible acts against, his students, your children. That part I get. And I feel your anger, and fear. But no matter where you go in life, no matter e job, the people who make up the group represent a snapshot of society as a whole. The police dept has bad people, good people, liars, cheaters, murderers, mentally ill, drug addicts, drug dealers, pedophiles, and every other type of personality or lifestyle found in the human condition. So do customer service reps, dentists, car dealers, construction workers, etc. and each one of them, if it was more than just an attraction, but an actual need to harm a child would find a way to do so. Generally if they find the things he had first, it's because that's all he did. Was use it for his own perversions. But if he hurt children, en usually it's that which brings the police to his door, and the illegal pics and vids are found after. Using that logic, (look it up, I'm not just making this up as I go) that your children thankfully were never in real danger, and have not been put through the horrific events that we all ball up our fists over when it hits close to home his way.

And Cholo, we have a system of justice here that allows for every citizen to get their day in court. Evidence gets planted. Cops and witnesses have been known to fabricate stories and plant evidence. It happens every day. And still the innocent get locked up while he guilty walk free. Both happen way too often, but by and large the system works.

Having one's day in court is what makes this country great.

The good news is that American citizens have a right to discuss issues that touch upon their lives. There are many parents who love their children and are concerned about the safety of all children. Americans don't need to be silenced. When the case finally makes it to a court room, I'll be present with other concerned American citizens.

He will most likely be found guilty and sentenced to prison for years!

It's important to rely upon police investigators not to engage in criminal behavior.

How come Joe asks others to remain cool and not think about what has happened while at the same time informing readers that it's possible that others have "planted evidence"?

Fortunately, this blog is also about FREE SPEECH.
