Couples who want to get married on Halloween in Contra Costa County can have their wedding officiated by a costumed character, officials with the county clerk-recorder’s office said.
A final list of characters won’t be available until Tuesday, but in past years the characters have included a witch, zombie, pirate, the Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood and Rosie the Riveter.
When couples arrive, they’ll receive a list of characters who can perform the ceremony. Deputy commissioners will also be available in classic robes.
For a long time, couples have come to get married in costume as well and sometimes guests come in costume too.
Several years ago, a couple saw a staff member from the office in costume and asked whether that person could marry them. In 2013, giving couples the opportunity to have their ceremony officiated by a costumed character became the norm.
The Clerk-Recorder’s office at 555 Escobar St. in Martinez and one of the ceremony rooms will be decorated and the Clerk-Recorder will have some additional tricks and treats for couples.
