The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is offering residents the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the criminal justice system with the Community Academy, a 10-week course aimed at educating the public and strengthening community relations.

The academy, which starts in September, will accept only 15 residents, so interested Contra Costa residents are encouraged to register sooner rather than later.

“I am proud to increase transparency and accessibility to our office with the start of this Community Academy,” Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton said in a statement. “This will be the only academy of its kind in Northern California.

“My hope is that the community will understand more about the work we do here,” she added. “Additionally, we can also build bridges to community members wanting to get a closer look at our office.”

The free course will give residents a comprehensive look at the criminal justice system with once weekly evening classes, and will include a tour of the Martinez county jail.

The evening classes will feature courses taught by seasoned attorneys and experienced investigators. The academy will also include special presenters such as deputy district attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, support staff, community-based organizations and other justice partners.

Interested residents can apply for the academy online through the DA’s website or in person at the DA’s Martinez office, 900 Ward Street. The application period ends Aug. 20.

The 10-week course will be held at the DA’s Office in downtown Martinez from 6:30-9:30 p.m. every Wednesday starting Sept. 12. Participants must be 18 or older, and either reside or work in Contra Costa County.
