California High School’s mock trial team is celebrating a win at the county level last month and preparing to compete at the statewide competition later this month in which the San Ramon squad will represent Contra Costa County.

The recent win was announced days after the Feb. 18 competition in which the Cal High team beat out its counterparts from Miramonte High School at the Martinez courthouse, with the awards ceremony and announcement of winners coming later that week on Feb. 20. It marked the eighth consecutive in which Cal High has taken first place in the countywide competition.

“This competition involves coordinating more than 40 trials in real courtrooms with practicing judges and attorneys; the intensity of the faceoffs reflects the seriousness with which participants and coaches approach the Mock Trial program,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said in an announcement. “This program not only supports, educates, and empowers students, but also exposes them to a variety of careers in the legal field. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support from the Superior Court, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department, and the many judges, coaches, and legal professionals who generously volunteer their time.”

San Ramon Valley High School made it to this year’s county semifinals, in which they were ultimately beat by the Miramonte team. A total of 19 teams from schools throughout the region participated in the countywide competition.

Now the Cal High team is set for a trip to Los Angeles from March 14-16, in which the Grizzlies will compete against teams from 35 other counties throughout the state. The winners of the statewide competition will go on to represent California in the national mock trial competition later in the year.
