The city of San Ramon is gearing up for its official July 4 celebrations later this week, in which residents are encouraged to participate in Run San Ramon at the start of the day and close out the holiday with an Independence Day Celebration concert.

This year’s event marks Run San Ramon’s 40th year, with the annual tradition returning along a new route in its latest installment.

The race will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with the Fastest Mile route from the San Ramon Community Center up past Iron Horse Middle school, with runners on the 10k and 5k loop routes setting out at 8 a.m.

Runners can pick up packets ahead of the race from Sports Basement at 1041 Market Place on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., or ahead of the race on Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

While all runners at the event will receive a participation trophy and commemorative shirts and bibs, awards for the three fastest runners in the chip-timed races will be granted based on age groupings: 9 years-old and younger, 10 to 13, 14 to 18, 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70-years-old or older for the Fastest Mile.

Age groupings for the 5k and 10k races are 8 and younger, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64,  65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84, and 85 and up.

Parking will be available in the lots at San Ramon City Hall, the San Ramon Community Center, and Iron Horse Middle School.

Festivities continue later in the day, with the Independence Day Celebration Concert kicking off with patriotic tunes from the Olivia Fields band and a tribute to veterans at 5 p.m. in Central Park, followed by the Billy Joel tribute band Billy Nation through 8 p.m.

Like the rest of Contra Costa County, one traditional July 4 activity that won’t be on the table in San Ramon – at least not legally – is fireworks, which are illegal countywide. Limited “Safe and Sane” fireworks are allowed just across the city limits in Dublin, however, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
