Last week I wrote about the Amador Valley wrestling team and the Dons’ huge win over De La Salle in a dual meet during the regular season.
Amador Valley coach Travis Chubb pointed out how wide open the forthcoming North Coast Section Dual Meet tournament would be.
Chubb didn’t want to pick a winner, but he felt like the winner would come from among Liberty, Granada, De La Salle or Amador Valley.
And when the dust settled last Saturday, it was Liberty, Granada, Amador Valley and De La Salle settling in the Top 4 spots.
As fate would have it, De La Salle (5th seed) and Amador (4) met in the first round, with the Spartans pulling out a 38-37 win. It would not be the last time the two teams met on Saturday.
Liberty (No. 1) beat De La Salle 43-36 in one semifinal, with Granada (3) beating No. 2 James Logan 35-33 in the other semifinal.
Meanwhile in the consolation bracket, Amador, by virtue of the first-round loss, had to battle all the way back through.
The Dons began the climb with a 66-15 win over Heritage, then dropped College Park 59-13. Next, the Dons got No. 2 James Logan and pummeled the Colts 53-21 to advance to the consolation finals.
After falling to Liberty, De La Salle dropped down to face Freedom in one consolation semifinal, winning 57-15 to advance to face Amador again.
There, the Dons got the best of De La Salle 39-34 to grab third place.
In the championship match, Liberty beat Granada 49-28 to win the title.
The EBAL individual tournament takes place this weekend.

The Dons finished out their regular season with a loss to league champion Dougherty Valley and a tie with crosstown rival Foothill.
Nine seniors played their final regular season games for Amador: Anon Prathnadi, Christian Hotta, Clayton Kahl, Coleson Franklin, Joseph D’Onofrio, Nikhil Bhargava, Reyansh Samanta, Ryan Bell and Santiago Rodriguez-Torres.
In the first game of the week, Mateo Eichler found the back of the net for the Dons in their loss to Dougherty.
Against the Falcons, Foothill struck first, but Amador responded quickly with a header from Atishay Sati, assisted by a pinpoint cross from Nader Hanna.
The junior varsity enjoyed a 2-1 victory over Dougherty Valley, with Ezra Hampton and Kinston Smith bagging the goals. Two days later they faced a tough challenge against Foothill, ultimately falling 1-2.
The freshman team finished their season on a high note, securing two impressive wins. First, they triumphed over Dougherty Valley in a nail-biting 1-0 match, then closed their season with a 3-0 loss to Foothill in their final game of the year.
Foothill boys’ soccer
The Falcons finished the regular season with a pair of tie games.
For starters, the week started with a 2-2 final with California.
Christian Bortot scored his first varsity goal for Foothill off a free kick cross from sophomore Nicholas Tahir. Nicholas then added his first varsity goal by following up Foothill keeper Chris Kachkouche’s freekick blast from the half-line.
In a 1-1 tie at home against Amador, junior Jack Leon scored off a shot he took from near the corner flag.
The game nearly ended on a length-of-the-field thrill ride.
The Falcons goalie made a save late and unleashed a long clearance toward the Amador goal as time was expiring.
The Amador goalie was all by himself so he backed up from his own 35-yard to collect it in his own box but the ball went under him in the slippery conditions, leaving him to sprint back, dive and stop it on the goal line.

The Dons split games in the final week of the regular season.
They started the week dropping a 58-50 final against Dougherty Valley. Jaylen Smith had 17 points for the Dons. In the finale, a 49-47 win over Foothill, Cade Krueger had 10 points and Dante Ventura had 14.
