Luka Mijatovic, the 16-year-old from Foothill High School in Pleasanton, set the swimming world on fire Saturday night by winning the 800-meter freestyle title by over three seconds at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships.
The U.S. Open, which took place at the Texas Swim Center in Austin, concluded its four-day meet on Saturday night. Mijatovic was second in the 400 freestyle and the 400 individual medley earlier in the competition before his record-setting performance Saturday night in the 800.
His winning time was 7:48.28, beating second-place finisher Illa Sibirtsev of Uzbekistan, who clocked a 7:51.85.
Mijatovic’s performance in the 800 not only shattered his national age group record but was the 12th fastest time by any American swimmer in history.
