The Amador Valley boys’ soccer team ended the year with a pair of wins and will head into the start of the East Bay Athletic League after the first of the year with a 6-1 record.

The Dons started off on Dec. 15 with 2-1 against Newark Memorial.

They got the first goal just four minutes into the game with Ethan Hernandez scoring, assisted by Jonas Lyions. Newark equalized just before half, but Atishay Sati got the game-winner with a header from a Nadar Hanna cross, earning Sati the player of the game.

The Dons ended the week with a 3-0 shutout against Freedom in Oakley. Goalie Tyler Causey stepped up and earned player of the game honors, holding the Patriots scoreless.

Amador’s goals were from Hanna, Nico Baylosis and Hernandez, with assists from Jio Lee and Lyions.

The junior varsity team had similar results, beating Newark 2-1 and Freedom 2-0.

Against Newark, the goal-scorers were Kingston Smith and Arayyan Faris, assisted by Sean Kim. Against Freedom, Oliver Heid and Sawyer Willes scored, assisted by Smith and Perez Gallegos. Dons goalie Colin Harrigton made seven to secure the shutout.

The Amador freshmen had just one game that week, a tough 4-0 loss to Monte Vista.

Amador had reason to celebrate as Eliana Caro won her 100th match as member of the Dons, on the way to a 5-1 mark and third in the Roger Briones Memorial girls’ tournament at San Leandro High.

The boys’ varsity was third as a team in the Bay Area 62 at Castro Valley.

TJ Chandler went 4-0 and took first place, with Santino Sevier taking second place in his class with a mark of 3-1.

Finishing third for the Dons were Ramon Alavi (4-1), Nathan Marek (5-1) and Evan Johnson (5-1).

In the Foothill Junior Varsity tournament, Adam Awad and Huseyn Huseynli took first with a perfect 4-0 marks. Tony Vatev (3-1) finished second, with Matthew Svanyuta (5-1) and Davit Baghadasaryan (4-1) finishing third.

Archer Fox (5-1) won the consolation title for the Dons.

Amador boys’ basketball

The Dons won a pair of games in the week of Dec. 16, including a 56-54 thriller over Benicia.

With the game tied at 54-54, Jaylin Smith was fouled on the game’s final shot. Smith calmly stepped to the line and made both free throws to give Amador the two-point win.

Smith finished the game with 24 points, while Elijah Stanley had nine points.

Four days later, the Dons beat Oakland Tech 57-50 in a physical game.

Smith had 22 points to lead Amador, while Stanley and Cade Krueger each had 11 points.
