A vehicle fell off of a tow truck and onto BART train tracks in Castro Valley following a crash on Interstate Highway 580 on Tuesday afternoon, snarling traffic for commuters on the highway and stopping train service for hours.
The crash was initially reported shortly before 3 p.m. on westbound Highway 580 east of Castro Valley Boulevard and led to the unoccupied vehicle ending up on the train tracks, according to the California Highway Patrol.
As a result, BART service was shut down between the Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations for hours until crews were able to use a crane to remove the vehicle from the tracks by about 5:30 p.m.
BART spokesperson Michelle Robertson said partial service resumed with major delays as of 6 p.m. on one of the two tracks in the area, while the other will require major repairs after the end of service Tuesday night.
CHP officials said all westbound and eastbound lanes of Highway 580 reopened shortly after 6 p.m.
Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson Cheryl Hurd said the crash also sparked a brush fire that was quickly extinguished, and that one person was taken to a hospital. Hurd did not know the person’s condition.
No other details about what led to the crash were immediately available from the CHP.
