The city of San Ramon has embarked on a process to develop a new Walking District Master Plan for the city’s core area, and residents are invited to a special webinar meeting on Wednesday to share their thoughts on how the plan can best be executed.
According to city staff, during the city’s 2020 Parks, Trails, Open Space, and Recreation Master Plan update process, residents affirmed their support for a new walking district, which would create a series of walking and biking trails combing through San Ramon’s core areas.
“Originating from a grassroots effort, this framework plan aims to define the location of walking and biking loops and enhance wayfinding and placemaking guidelines for the routes and signage in and around the city core,” city staff said.
San Ramon has embarked on a six-month process to develop the framework for the plan, which would define the area where trails will be developed in the city — with city officials aiming to have the master plan completed by the end of July.
Early images have the walking district projected to be located roughly along the Iron Horse Regional Trail, south of Alcosta Boulevard between Crow Canyon and Bollinger Canyon roads. Roughly encompassing the area that includes San Ramon City Hall and City Center Bishop Ranch.
City staff say shade, seating, easy wayfinding and the creation of a generally desirable place to walk and gather are all central goals of the development of a plan.
“In addition, the Master Plan will promote healthy community initiatives; identify connections to the Iron Horse Trail, points of interest, schools, and neighborhoods; develop wayfinding strategies; and support economic development,” staff said.
Residents can learn more and have their opinions heard during a webinar meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (March 3).
