A two-term San Ramon councilmember and former vice mayor is seeking election to the mayor’s seat in this fall’s general election.
District 2 Councilmember Mark Armstrong has announced his campaign for the position amid the pending departure of current mayor Dave Hudson, who is in his second term at the helm after more than two decades on the City Council.
As vice mayor, Armstrong led the city during Hudson’s months-long medical absence last year.
“With several years of dedicated service on the City Council and my tenure as Vice Mayor, which included a four-month stint as Acting Mayor in 2023, I am confident that my experience has equipped me with the skills needed to effectively serve as your Mayor,” Armstrong said in his campaign announcement.
“Our City deserves to be led by a Mayor who has demonstrated a passion to serve our Community and has the experience to be successful,” he continued. “I believe I am that individual.”
If Armstrong is successful in his campaign for mayor, it will be his second time stepping into Hudson’s shoes. Armstrong was first appointed to the City Council to fulfill the remainder of Hudson’s council term following Hudson’s election to mayor in 2020. Armstrong went on to be elected to a full four-year term in the District 2 council seat in 2022.
In his campaign announcement, Armstrong emphasized that his political aspirations were local and aimed at supporting the community in which he has lived with his family for 20 years.
“I am committed to living in, serving, and improving San Ramon and, unlike too many other people elected to public office, I am not going to use any City office I hold as a ‘stepping stone’ to get elected to another County, State or Federal public office,” Armstrong said.
In particular, Armstrong said he was committed to “protecting San Ramon’s existing neighborhoods from these harmful state laws” amidst a situation in which he said the state “has forced cities to do and approve things that are hurtful to them,” as well as support for the city’s police department.
“Even though San Ramon is one of the safest cities in California to live in, I want to make sure that we support our Police Department with our Policies, our Programs, and our City Budget priorities,” Armstrong said.
With Armstrong’s decision to run for mayor and the launch of his campaign coming directly on the heels of Hudson’s decision not to seek reelection, it’s unclear what – if any – challengers Armstrong might face as the race develops.
