Officials with the Town of Danville took to the downtown streets this week to celebrate the pending construction projects downtown that are aimed at increasing pedestrian safety and facility community gathering spaces as part of a larger series of improvements.
Mayor Karen Stepper provided insight into the background of the Downtown Catalyst Master Project and the areas of Danville’s historic downtown that it is set to renovate in a kick-off event at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, as well as the history and future of Prospect Park Plaza at the intersection of Hartz and Prospect avenues.
The intersection has historically been – and is set to resume its place as – a central community gathering space in the community since the early 20th century, with the pending catalyst project including renovations and enhancements to the site that include permanent seating, improved lighting, and a small stage.
“This investment in our community benefits residents, visitors, and business owners,” Stepper said. “It is our hope to stimulate Downtown business, and have visitors be able to stay later in the day with enhanced lighting and places to enjoy art and music. Come watch us work!”
Improvements to Prospect Plaza are set to come later in the construction process for the initial phase of the project, with work planned to kick off the first week of April. The initial construction phase will consist of safety enhancements for pedestrians, including improved pedestrian crossings and intersection expansions intended to increase visibility.
Overall, the first steps of the construction process starting in the coming weeks is set to focus on traffic mitigation and landscape improvement efforts at the five intersections along Hartz Avenue between School Street and Linda Mesa Avenue as well as improvements to the area surrounding the Village Theatre in addition to the revitalization of Prospect Park Plaza.
Construction is scheduled to kick off Monday (April 1) and continue through late fall with most work being conducted from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
