Looking for a party Tuesday? All you need to do is step outside. Danville’s National Night Out, an annual event that promotes neighborhood spirit, police-community relations and crime and drug awareness, will be held on Aug. 6 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to lock their doors and spend the evening outside participating in neighborhood potlucks, block parties and ice cream socials. The Danville Police Department and potentially the Fire Department will visit neighborhoods registered to participate in the event.

“I think the value of National Night Out is that it’s a recognition of being productive in crime prevention in partnership with the local police,” said Carol Burroughs, Danville Police Department’s crime prevention specialist. “It’s a chance to make a public stand for community-police awareness.”

There are approximately 16 neighborhoods registered so far, which is higher than last year’s turnout, said Burroughs. Between 300 and 500 people are expected to participate in the event.

National Night Out was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 as an effort to strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts. Since then, it has grown to include over 37 million people from communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases.
