The Election Night leads for both incumbent candidates in this year’s race for two seats on the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education have shrunk as additional ballots continue to be counted by the county, but both still appear in position for victory with minimal ballots remaining to be counted as of this week.

Area 2 Trustee Shelley Clark was at 59.31% of the vote as of the second interim update from Contra Costa County elections officials released Wednesday afternoon, down from 61.87% as of the initial Election Night count, with Area 1 Trustee Laura Bratt at 51.63% of the vote down from 56.66% of the vote as of Election Night.

The latest results reflect an ongoing trend of the margins shrinking slightly as more ballots are counted, pointing towards more support for the two challengers – Karin Shumway for the Area 2 seat, and Sukriti Sehgal for the Area 3 seat – than initial numbers suggested. The trend first emerged hours after the first results were released, with Clark at 60.09% and Bratt at 54.49% as of 1:09 a.m. on Nov 6.

However, the latest numbers are likely to do nothing more than signal slightly greater support for the two challengers than was initially anticipated, particularly for the Area 2 race. Clark had claimed victory and Shumway had conceded as of Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, initial results are also holding for Measure Q — the $144 renewal parcel tax — as additional ballots have been counted, with the support of 74.76% of voters as of the latest count, well above its required two-thirds threshold to pass.

While Bratt’s lead is more narrow and she has not yet claimed victory in the race, a majority of ballots (519,078) have been counted, with only 15,150 still remaining countywide as of Wednesday. It’s unclear how many of those ballots are from SRVUSD voters in either Area 2 or Area 3. The next update from the elections office is expected Friday afternoon.
