Elected officials recognized 190 California high school scholarship winners on Wednesday, including three from the San Ramon Valley, as part of an “education salute.”

“Discussions of California’s budget problems and educational cuts will be put on hold as elected officials join Comcast in a celebration of education on the steps of the California State Capitol,” a release read. Winners of Comcast’s “Leaders and Achievers” scholarship, which awards students for leadership and community service, received $1,000 on the Capitol steps.

San Ramon Valley High’s Christopher Riley, Doughtery Valley High’s Evan Bell and Venture student Evan O’Dorney were among Wednesday’s honorees. Christoper will attend Stanford in the fall to study biochemistry while Evan Bell will study biochemistry at UC Berkeley. Intel Science Talent Search winner Evan O’Dorney will study mathematics at Harvard.

Comcast distributed $210,000 in scholarships to seniors from 104 cities at the special recognition ceremony. Each high school located in a Comcast service area is eligible to nominate one senior to receive this scholarship; nominees must demonstrate leadership abilities, a commitment to their community and plan on attending an accredited, nonprofit college, university or vocational/technical school.

  1. Read quickly, “SRVUSD” (the school district) can easily be mistaken for “SRVHS” (the school). I know because it happened to me and I only realized my mistake after getting down to the the 3rd paragraph.
Regardless, congrats to the students, their schools and parents, and thanks to the Danville Weekly for finding some good news to report!
