Asbury Players Community Theater is set to return to stage in Livermore this weekend to perform its closing shows of “Stealing Home”, a family-friendly farce centered on the robbery of a funeral home.
During the play, police catch petty criminals Cecil and Pug on their nighttime visit to a funeral home. In an attempt at evasion, Cecil tries fast-talking his way out of the situation.
As it turns out, the funeral home owner’s long-lost son and Cecil are the same boy who disappeared at an amusement park decades earlier. But for the owner’s three daughters who intend to sell the funeral home, Cecil’s appearance serves as quite the wrench in their plan.
Written by Pat Cook and co-directed by Martie Muldoon and Jim Lobao, “Stealing Home” is considered to be simultaneously comedic and poignant, Asbury Players reps said.
The upcoming performances follow opening weekend shows held June 21-22.
“The two performances we’ve had, everybody has walked away smiling, laughing,” Muldoon said. “We always try to choose plays that are fun and funny and have a bit of heart in them.”
Asbury Players hosts annual performances and is sponsored by Asbury United Methodist Church.
This year’s show features 11 cast members, including several from the congregation.
Proceeds from this year’s concessions are set to go towards funding the construction of a new playground at Asbury, Muldoon said.
The upcoming performances are scheduled this Friday and Saturday (June 27-28) at 7:30 p.m and Sunday (June 29) at 2 p.m.
Performances are held at Asbury United Methodist Church located at 4743 East Ave. in Livermore. Tickets are available for purchase at the door or through the church at 925-447-1950.
