It is time for another week of the 2026-27 prep sports year!
The Playbook will bring you inside the East Bay Athletic League, offering features, opinions and analysis on all the sports. I’ve been covering the EBAL for over 40 years now and will bring you insight of my four decades of prep sports.
The Big Picture looks at the first week of football for the EBAL teams and how much you can read into what happened as teams kicked off their seasons. You will also get a chance to read about what I think is the matchup of the week. It is a new feature this year as we will carry it throughout the year.
EBAL Power Rankings sees the debut of the football rankings with girls’ volleyball and flag football rankings coming into play next week.
What to Watch check out the slate for week two of the football season, as well as the first night of EBAL volleyball, and some key flag football games.
Fast Five will debut next week with a new slate of questions for the season!

Takeaways from first week of games for Tri-Valley football teams
Week 1 of the high school football season has come and gone for East Bay Athletic League teams – and as always, there were mixed results…
Power Rankings as of Aug. 31.
TRI-VALLEY FOOTBALL
1. San Ramon Valley (1-0): The Wolves go on the road to El Cerrito a program that had moved to one of the top programs in the section and hang a 41-14 thumping on the Gauchos.
2. Monte Vista (1-0): The Mustangs hosted North Bay powerhouse Marin Catholic and came away with the 27-10 opening night win.
3. Granada (1-0): The Matadors went on the road and beat Campolindo 19-7, a solid start to the season.
4. California (0-1): Can’t get a much tougher season-opener as the Grizzlies drop a 32-21 game to an always-strong Liberty program.
5. Livermore (0-1): Tough opener for the Cowboys as they go on the road to Ripon, a Central Section power and fall 27-24.
Others: Dublin (0-1), Foothill (1-0), Amador Valley (0-1).
* These rankings do not include De La Salle, Dougherty Valley or Emerald as the Spartans play an independent schedule from the EBAL, the Wildcats have no EBAL games this season and the Aerouants are not in the EBAL.
Today (Sept. 1)
EBAL flag football: Amador Valley at Dublin, Foothill at California, San Ramon Valley at Livermore, Carondelet at Monte Vista, all 7:45 p.m.
Thursday (Sept. 3)
Non-league football: Skyline at Dougherty Valley, 7 p.m.
EBAL girls’ volleyball: Amador at Granada, Monte Vista at California, Livermore at Dublin, Carondelet at San Ramon Valley, Foothill at Dougherty Valley, all 6:15 p.m.
EBAL flag football: Amador Valley at Freedom, Alameda at California, 7:45 p.m.
Friday (Sept. 4)
Non-league football: James Logan at California, Dublin at Vanden, Monte Vista at Liberty, San Ramon Valley at Enochs (Modesto), Analy at Foothill, all 7 p.m. Amador Valley at Livermore, Miramonte at Granada, 7:15 p.m. Cardinal Newman at De La Salle, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday (Sept. 5)
Non-league football: Emerald at American, 7 p.m.
