A former student athlete and competitive chess player from San Ramon was killed in a solo crash in Livermore last week, with the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identifying Ashwin Punaroor as the teenager who died at the scene.
The cause of the crash in the wee hours of Aug. 24 on North Livermore Avenue under Interstate 580 remains under investigation, with CHP continuing to seek additional information and witnesses. The initial report indicated that the young man was driving a 2017 Nissan Leaf southbound on North Livermore Avenue just after 2:30 a.m. when the car left the roadway and hit a concrete pillar at the freeway underpass.
Punaroor, 18, was a member of the 2026 graduating class from Dougherty Valley High School, according to the grad list provided by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District in the spring.
SRVUSD and DVHS officials had not commented publicly on the recent graduate’s death as of Monday.
Youth sports websites identify Punaroor as a member of the Dougherty Valley basketball team during his freshman year, and as a member of the track and field team in later years, competing as recently as this year’s East Bay Athletic League championship.
Punaroor is listed as the fifth-place finisher for a 2018 Bay Area Chess Club tournament.
No further details about the circumstances of the crash or the CHP investigation were available as of Monday afternoon.
