Students saw cars crashing, kids dying, an ambulance zooming and a helicopter flying at the San Ramon Valley High School football stadium yesterday.
The simulated car accident caused by drunken driving was part of a program called “Every 15 Minutes,” presented Tuesday, March 27. The event and simulation were orchestrated by the Danville Police Department, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and other government agencies, said Sgt. Troy Craig.
“It’s actually quite a dramatic impact on the kids,” Craig said. “It brings the connection a little bit closer to them.”
The event began 10 a.m. at the stadium and families were invited to attend, he said. Approximately six San Ramon students acted as drivers, with some of them simulating being drunk while driving. As a result, two cars crashed and students were injured.
During the presentation, two students were pronounced dead at the scene and others were taken to the hospital by ambulance and helicopter.
“It’s all about drinking and driving and education,” Craig said. “It encourages kids not to do that kind of behavior.”
Pilots from the California Shock Trauma Air Rescue organization flew a helicopter to pick up one of the students.
“Everybody plays a big hand on this,” Craig said, adding that real life accidents are similar to the presentation.
