Royal Theater Academy is presenting “Mean Girls: High School Edition” for the next two weekends in Livermore, the culmination of summer preparations for the 30-plus Tri-Valley residents on the cast and crew.
Directed by Trenton Torain and Caedon Perriman, the RTA production is an adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by the 2004 movie written by Tina Fey and starring Lindsay Lohan. The story follows Cady Heron as she relocates from homeschooling on the African savana with her zoologist parents back to America and a suburban public high school where she tries to fit in among the teenager cliques like “The Plastics”.
“This production has truly been a six-week sprint, and I’m incredibly proud of what this cast has accomplished in such a short amount of time,” Torain told the Pleasanton Weekly. “‘Mean Girls’ is a hilarious, high-energy, PG-13 show, but underneath the comedy are important messages about identity, belonging, friendship, and the harm we can cause when we tear others down to build ourselves up.”
“These performers are extremely talented, and they’ve approached the material with an impressive level of professionalism, maturity, and experience. They’ve also been absolutely hilarious and so much fun to work with,” Torain added. “I can’t wait for audiences to see everything they’ve built together—and hopefully leave thinking about how much better our communities can be when we choose kindness and make room for people to be themselves.”
Lead roles are portrayed by Ella Brandt (Cady), Tea Morillas (Regina), Alaina Lewis (Gretchen), Bianca Ty (Karen), Lyla Edwards (Janis) and Naman Mathur (Damian).
The support crew includes production assistant Emma Monroe, choreographer Bridget Werner, assistant vocal director Lyss Crumrine, costume designers Kristi Grand and Sally Scrutchin, props master Kylie Patterson, dance assistant AJ Vo and assistant to the director Alaina Lewis.
RTA’s “Mean Girls: High School Edition” opens this Friday (Aug. 14) at 7 p.m. at Livermore High School. Shows continue this Saturday and next (Aug. 15 and 22) at 7 p.m. and this Sunday and next (Aug. 16 and 23) at 2 p.m.
