The San Ramon Planning Commission is set to hear an update on the city’s Climate Action Plan following reviews and discussions of the plan by the Climate Action Task Force in a series of meetings over the past year, with the task force supporting the current draft documents associated with the plan.
The Climate Action Plan (CAP) update is a lingering piece of business from the most recent General Plan update, which the city adopted overall in 2023 with the aim of completing the Climate Action Plan update later on.
“The CAP Update is the primary implementation strategy of the General Plan 2040 to establish a long-term GHG (greenhouse gas) emission reduction plan, consistent with State GHG reduction targets for 2030 and 2045,” associate planner Ryan Driscoll wrote in a staff report prepared for the upcoming meeting. “Additionally, the General Plan 2040 Environmental Impact Report (EIR) Mitigation Measure GHG-1 requires the City to adopt and implement an updated, qualified CAP, which is a ‘qualified GHG reduction strategy’ under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) based on local conditions.”
The Climate Action Task Force was established in 2024 with the goal of facilitating input on the Climate Action Plan and the current update, with the plan having first been established by the city in 2011.
Since its inception, the task force has met a total of five times, ultimately voicing its support for the draft Climate Action Plan update as it stands at the most recent of those meetings last month and recommending the update’s adoption.
With the public review period for the draft update now underway, city officials are seeking the public’s feedback on the draft which consists of information about current and projected greenhouse gas emissions, a reduction measure framework for greenhouse gas emissions, reduction measures, and implementation and monitoring.
The public review period is set to conclude May 15, with feedback set to be considered by the City Council ahead of its vote on whether or not to adopt the update, which is tentatively scheduled for June 10, according to Driscoll’s staff report.
The San Ramon Planning Commission is set to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday (May 6). The agenda is available here.
