Holidays in the Valley

The Museum of the San Ramon Valley’s annual Holidays in the Valley exhibit is now on display in the museum at 205 Railroad Avenue in Danville.

“MuseumSRV’s Holidays in the Valley exhibit offers a journey through cherished traditions and symbols that capture the essence of this season,” MSRV organizers said in an announcement Monday.

The exhibit features classic decorations, personal mementos, and other memorabilia that captures the past and present holiday spirit in the San Ramon Valley and around the world, as well as a classic, working model train display that will be running during museum hours.

Pearl Harbor Day

Save Mount Diablo is set to light the historic beacon atop Mount Diablo on Saturday (Dec. 7) in recognition of the 83rd anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

“The beacon lighting is a tribute to those individuals that lost their lives at Pearl Harbor,” said Pearl Harbor survivor Earl “Chuck” Kohler, who is scheduled to be on hand for the ceremony at the California State University, East Bay Concord Center. Gary Moreland, the son of a Pearl Harbor survivor, is also set to speak during the event.

The beacon’s history is forever tied to Pearl Harbor. First turned on in 1928, the beacon went dark in December 1941 during the strategic coastal blackout in the wake of the attacks in Hawaii and stayed off until Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in 1964. It has been relit annually on Dec. 7 since.

Following a viewing of the USS Arizona exhibit starting at 3 p.m. at the college, the ceremony is set to start at 3:45 p.m. in the Oak Room and the switch will be flipped to light the beacon at 5 p.m.

The Town of Danville is inviting local businesses to participate in its Swing Into Danville Storefront Decorating Contest, “a new holiday tradition designed to bring the community together and celebrate the season,” according to organizers in an announcement from the town Wednesday.

The contest kicks off on Saturday (Dec. 7) and will run through Jan. 4. During that period, visitors and residents are invited to explore decorated windows and storefronts while exploring local businesses, and to cast votes for their favorite displays.
