Public Works Week
The Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) is celebrating National Public Works Week alongside more than 30,000 other communities recognizing the occasion nationwide.
Festivities kicked off ahead of the national recognition week on May 17 with a display at the Truck Time Festival in San Ramon hosted by the Dougherty Valley and San Ramon Valley rotary clubs.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “People, Purpose, Presence,” aimed at highlighting the “constant presence” of public works employees in their work providing crucial services including water, wastewater, and recycled water treatment and delivery according to a press release from DSRSD.
Last weekend and throughout the week, DSRSD is encouraging community members – particularly those eying their own careers in public works – to explore the backgrounds and career trajectories of its current staff here.
O’Neill studio retreat
The Eugene O’Neill Foundation is inviting applicants interested in playwrighting or acting to this year’s studio retreat for high school students.
The 10-day retreat at the Tao House – scheduled from June 18 to June 29, with a break on June 23 and June 24 – aims to provide students with insight into the life and work of Eugene O’Neill along with honing their own talents in acting and playwrighting in a hands-on environment guided by those working in the field.

Event innovator competition
Discover San Ramon has announced a new event innovator competition, described as a “dynamic new initiative” for high school students to bring ideas for original events that showcase the city’s community spirit to life.
“We believe in the creativity and potential of our youth,” said Shawn Milburn, General Manager at the Marriott San Ramon and spokesperson for Discover San Ramon in a press release May 9. “This competition not only provides students with a platform to showcase their ideas, but also strengthens community bonds by involving them directly in the city’s event planning process.”
Organizers will select three winning proposals to fund with $5,000 grants. Applications – open through June 13 – and additional information are available here.
School volunteer requirements
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has announced new requirements for volunteers in the school district starting this summer in alignment with new state legislation going into effect.
Starting July 1, school volunteers will be required to complete a Livescan fingerprint background check along with mandated reporter and sexual harassment training in order to work on school sites. Through June 30, the district’s Be a Mentor program will provide fee waivers for the $25 fee for Livescan.
New volunteers for the upcoming school year are encouraged to complete applications and begin the clearance process starting June 1.
Views in the Valley
There is still time to submit photos of “the stunning beauty of the Tri-Valley’s open spaces, agriculture, wildlife and recreational landscapes” in Tri-Valley Conservancy’s 2025 Views in the Valley competition.
Open to adults and youth (grades 6-12), the annual contest offers prizes and bragging rights to local photographers capturing wildlife and nature scenes in Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon and Sunol.
The deadline is 11:59 p.m. next Friday (May 30). Winners will be announced in July. For more information visit trivalleyconservancy.org.
