Heritage Park now open

A new children’s playground, public art installation, and green space are the latest new additions to San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch neighborhood, with officials from the city and Sunset Development Company celebrating the debut of Heritage Park Thursday near Bollinger Canyon Road and Walnut Drive.

“Heritage Park represents the very best of San Ramon — thoughtful design, a commitment to public spaces and a place where our community can come together,” said San Ramon Mayor Mark Armstrong in a press release Thursday. “This park will serve residents of all ages, offering opportunities to connect, play and enjoy the outdoors in the heart of Bishop Ranch. It is also a great example of what’s possible when public vision and private investment come together to create vibrant spaces that benefit the entire community.”

The new park, nestled next to the new Belmont Village senior housing community and the Iron Horse Trail overpass over Bollinger Canyon Road, is the first of 50 new parks set to be developed as part of the CityWalk Master Plan and widespread redevelopment throughout Bishop Ranch.

Among the park’s features is the Little Big House, an interactive public art display “where stories come to life and imagination connects with everyday experience,” according to Thursday’s press release from Sunset Development.

“Our vision was to create a social sculpture where stories take shape and imagination meets everyday life,” said Roberto Behar of R&R Studios, one of the artists behind the project. “The Little Big House blurs the boundaries between the familiar and the fantastical, the real and the utopian, creating a shared space for play, belonging and coming together.”

The installation is the first of what Sunset Development officials described as a series of “permanent, public artworks designed to inspire wonder and delight across all ages” in the neighborhood as part of the company’s $20 million public art program.
