A 19-year-old San Francisco resident is in custody on suspicion of sexual battery against a minor in a bathroom at Golden Gate Park last week, police announced Friday.

On Oct. 23, a child at soccer practice reported that they had been sexually assaulted in a public restroom near the Polo Fields in the park.

A tip from a parent who “saw something” allowed police to narrow down to one suspect, said San Francisco Police Cmdr. Thomas Maguire during the briefing Friday announcing the arrest.

Dominick Valle-Buitrago was tracked down in Pleasant Hill and placed under arrest Thursday after a week of investigation through interviewing witnesses and conducting DNA testing.

He has been booked into jail on suspicion of sexual battery, lewd acts against a child, kidnapping and child molestation. He is in custody without bond.

“I know that this case has been incredibly troubling for the community where this occurred,” said Interim Police Chief Paul Yep. “Moreover, we take crimes against minors extremely seriously, and we will do everything within our power to make sure the suspect in this case faces justice.”

Prosecutors will announce charges on Monday, with an arraignment expected for the following day, according to District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

A park ranger will be stationed in the area during busy afterschool hours, and a security camera has been installed as well at the Polo Fields, said Mayor Daniel Lurie.
