A man who allegedly jumped on Highway 4 in Antioch to get away from police on Monday was fatally struck by a vehicle being driven by a county employee, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP is investigating the collision pursuant to the County Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident Protocol, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said.

The collision was reported at 10:40 a.m. just west of Sommersville Road.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, just after 10:30 a.m., the suspect “engaged in a disturbance” at Delta Bowl on Delta Fair Boulevard in Antioch. When officers responded, the suspect climbed over a fence and entered eastbound Highway 4 on foot. An oncoming county vehicle being driven by a district attorney senior inspector struck the man and he died. According to the DA’s office, the inspector’s duties on the road had nothing to do with the disturbance.

The CHP is conducting the traffic investigation and the California Department of Justice has also been notified, the District Attorney’s Office said. Any legal analysis of what happened will be handled by an entity other than the District Attorney’s Office, so as not to pose a conflict of interest, a spokesperson for the office said.
