The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday selected Supervisor Diane Burgis to serve as the new board chair.
The board at Tuesday’s meeting also chose Supervisor Ken Carlson to assume the role of vice chair. The chair and vice chair roles typically rotate annually, with the chair presiding over board meetings.
Burgis, who was initially elected in 2016 and was most recently re-elected in 2024, represents District 3 that includes Antioch, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen, Oakley and other parts of eastern Contra Costa County.
Carlson was elected in 2022 as the board’s first openly LGBTQIA+ member and represents District 4, which includes the cities of Clayton, Pleasant Hill, and a majority of Concord and Walnut Creek.
“At a time when our communities are facing complex challenges, I look forward to advancing solutions that strengthen emergency preparedness and public safety, expand access to mental health services, and ensure county government remains responsive, equitable, and accountable to the residents we serve,” Burgis said in a new release from the county.
The board oversees a $7.16 billion budget and serves the 1.2 million residents of Contra Costa County.
