Danville police recently apprehended a man for allegedly stealing the department’s bait bicycle, leading to a safety advisory to cyclists who leave their bikes unattended even if for just a few minutes.

The arrest was made at approximately 8:30 a.m. Dec. 16, the Danville Police Department said in a Facebook post on Saturday. The suspect, whose name was not released, was booked into jail on suspicion of grand theft.

The bait bike, which is equipped with a GPS tracker and placed in a strategic location in town, is used by police to catch theives in the act, with the hope that prospective criminals will target the decoy rather than a resident’s bicycle, according to DPD.

“Bicycle theft is on the rise,” DPD stated. “This arrest serves as a great reminder: Always Lock Your Bike! Even for a short time.”

Police encouraged cyclists to use reliable locks to secure their bikes when unattended in public, such as U-Locks, chain locks, cable locks, folding locks or frame locks.

Their other tips included: “use two locks for high security; lock in well-lit, busy areas; secure the frame and the wheels, not just wheels; use security bolts for quick-release parts (if the seat is secured by a quick release, consider taking the seat with you); and stay vigilant and help us keep our bikes safe in Danville. Report suspicious activities!”
